What is the most potent word in marketing?

This word is responsible for billions of dollars worth of transactions per year.

It is the reason for millions of clicks, downloads, and purchases every day, yet some marketers still don’t leverage how powerful this word actually is.

What is this word?


This one-syllable, three-letter word is the most potent word in marketing.

If you walk into a party and yell the word “You!” the majority of people’s ears will perk up and turn to look at you.

One obvious reason may be because you’re yelling, but another reason is because people are narcissists.

When you go into the group and yell “You!” everyone will respond, “Me? Is someone talking to me? Yay! Someone is talking about me!”

You always need to center your marketing message around your customer. That ONE person.

Most amateur marketers will center their marketing around themselves. “Hey! Look at our company! Look how big we are!”

This is the natural thing to do, yet the wrong thing to do.

When someone opens a website, they are asking themselves, “What’s in it for me?”. That is why website bounce rates are so high and people leave your website within 10 seconds. Because it’s relevant to them and their situation.

(See how I used the words YOUR website in that last sentence?)

When I say people are leaving YOUR website, it brings you into the story and it supercharges its relevancy to you.

(See, I did it again.)

I purposely even put the word “you” in the title of this post.

“The Most POTENT word in marketing. It may surprise you.”

Subconsciously, your brain latched onto to that word and said, “Will it really surprise me?”

In grade school, we are taught to NEVER use the word “you” in our formal writing. It is considered impolite and out of the question.

What you’re reading right now is proposing that you write your marketing like a personal letter. Something that speaks DIRECTLY to that one person, tickling the egotistical part of their brain.

It is also important to mention that it is okay for your audience to ask “What’s in it for me?” They SHOULD be selfish. It’s their limited time and their hard-earned money that they’re spending on you.

What can you do for them?

If you’re not communicating to them in benefit-oriented language, explaining to them how your product, your business, or YOU can help them, why should they listen to you?

Life is too short.

10 Morning Rituals To 10X Your Life

Just Another Day…

You open your eyes and stare at the ceiling –

What time is it?

Clearly, it’s daylight out, but what time is it?

It could be 9 am, 1 pm, you don’t know for sure.

You sit up in your bed…

“Okay, what do I need to do today?”

You Still Have A Boss

Like Darren Hardy says, when have your own business, you still have a boss (yourself), the only problem is, your boss sucks.

Unlike your friends who have 9-5 jobs, you don’t have a supervisor to prioritize your tasks, telling you what to do, and keeping you accountable to make sure you do it.

More often than not, you find yourself “freestyling” your day, hoping for the most efficiency and effectiveness possible.

The  Morning Ritual

A “Morning Ritual,” is a series of tasks completed in a very specific order that primes your mind and body to perform at the highest level that day.

The terms most people are familiar with are “habit” and “routine.” The word “habit” usually has a negative connotation and is associated with like biting your nails or eating too much chocolate (while this can sometimes feel positive).

A “routine,” on the other hand, is used to describe some more positive, like a gym regimen, or cooking a healthy breakfast.

The problem with the “routine, even if the routine has a positive outcome, can evoke a feeling of resistance because of the obligation.

One way to mitigate this negative effect is to reframe the activity and use the word “ritual.” Referring to an activity a “ritual” instead of a “routine” sets in a whole different feeling – something that is more inviting and beneficial.

Calling a splashing of cold water on your face in the morning as a “ritual” gives it a more holistic feel and by the end of it, you can feel a bit more “complete” as a person.

Your mindset every day should be to wake up and make yourself feel as strong and effective as possible so you can focus in and create as much value for the world as you can, especially when it comes to starting, building, and growing a business.

Here are a few morning rituals that you can try tomorrow:
(1) Wake up early

Get up early in the morning while the world is quiet and still asleep to eliminate any distractions or interruptions while you complete your morning ritual and the other most important tasks of the day.

(2) Eliminate any possibility of negative input

Eliminate the possibility of a negative influence reaching your attention while completing your morning ritual. Text messages, email, music – keep it off for 60-90 minutes.  You owe it to yourself. Especially avoid the news. The statistic is that nine out of eleven news stories are negatively-oriented to what is happening in the world because as we know, human beings are more attracted to the negative than the positive. This is not the type of influence that you want affecting your morning the rest of your day. This type of information can pollute your clarity of thought and peace of mind.

(3) Clear sinuses and deep breathing

Clear your sinus system so you can breathe more easily and deliver more sweet oxygen to your brain that it loves so much.

(4) Rehydrate

Drink 500 mL of water to rehydrate your system. This is biologically very important as you have been dehydrating your body for the last 8–10 hours while you were asleep. This is why people feel so groggy and are rubbing their eyes in the morning. Rejuvenate your body with some delicious H2O. As a bonus, this is a great time to mix in some whey protein powder or take any supplements you might need.

(5) Visualization

Review your schedule and mentally rehearse your the day. Visualize yourself completing what you have planned and absolutely crushing it.

(6) Spiritual growth

For a few minutes, do something that stimulates your spiritual growth such as prayer and/or meditation.

(7) Practice gratitude

When some people wake up, they immediately start thinking of what they are missing in their life. Instead, think of at least 3 things that you are most grateful for in that exact moment. This will give you a sense of abundance and remind you of all the good that you have going for yourself. This can really brighten your day off the bat.

(8) Review your “why”

Look at your monthly, quarterly, yearly, even more more long-term goals and think about why you are doing what are you doing. Are you being intentional with your actions with a higher purpose in mind? A great tool for this ritual is using a vision board.

(9) Journal

Have you ever had a dream, woken up, then quickly forgot what it was? The reason is that when our conscious mind goes to sleep, our subconscious is brought to the surface along with what lives there. There’s no better time to find out what iyou truly value in life than in the morning when your subconscious is still somewhat surfaced.

Quickly grab a pen and record your thoughts before your subconscious becomes suppressed once the world wakes up to tell you what to do. This is preferably done handwritten. Psychological research supports that putting pen to paper and tactile writing with your hand connects the mental, physical, and emotional dimensions of your brain and can even help ward off dementia.

(10) The One Thing

Before you transition from your “morning ritual” to your “normal day” to spend at least 25 minutes on the most important, leveraged thing that you can do for your business. Think to yourself, “What is the one thing, that if I got it done, would add the most value to my business?” After you decide ethat, put your blinders on, and get it done.

There you have it! A few morning rituals that you can try tomorrow morning. It is important to note that this list is not exhaustive of the rituals that can benefit your life. You have to find what works for you in that moment of your life. Other things that you can do include exercising, reading, etc.

It’s important to Never do a morning ritual for its own sake. Only do the morning rituals that actually support your long-term goals, vision, and purpose. For example, if you want to improve your public speaking skills, instead of writing a 10-minute journal entry, it may benefit you more to record a 10-minute video blog.

Measure Your Progress

“What gets measured gets managed.” — Peter Drucker

If you don’t measure something, you can’t improve it.

Have a list of your routines that you can refer to in the morning, either on paper or on your phone (turn on airplane mode to eliminate distraction and interruption). This way you don’t have to rely on your memory to know exactly what you have to do and in what order.

If you want to take it to the next level, use an excel sheet or an app on your phone that quantifies and tracks your progress. When I started doing this, I was amazed how I had tricked myself into thinking that I was consistent with my rituals when I was not even close. Current research shows that it takes 66 days in a row to form a new “habit.” If you measure your progress, your subconscious will lock into that activity and start working it out it out for you.

Thi is a spreadsheet I used to use to track the completion of my rituals. I then migrated all of this to an app that I use called “Way of Life.”

Take it to the next-next level: accountability. Share your spreadsheet with an accountability partner so you can keep each other in check. Peak performance and sports psychology show that social pressure and encouragement from a teammate will motivate you to perform better instead of relying solely on yourself for support.

7 Productivity Hacks That You Can Try Today

I’ve tried them all, read countless books and articles, and the below “productivity hacks” are ones that worked for me, some of which, you may not have heard of. You will find a lot of them overlap and are interconnected with one another.
***Self-discipline is overrated. Use systems instead. Your willpower will eventually be depleted.***
HACK#1: Wake up early

If I am in an “Immersion Cycle” <<hyperlink>>, I try to make it a point to wake up at 4:30 am. Why? When you wake up this early, the world is still asleep. You’re not getting bogged down by emails or feeling the pressure of checking your phone to see if there’s an urgent and important email that has to be read immediately. The world is quiet, and you have the next few hours to yourself, allowing to work at a more relaxed pace. Also, if you work your normal eight hours (which it is very difficult to actually be prolific past these initial eight hours), that means you can wrap up around noon or 1 pm, and the world is truly your oyster. You can relax, cook and eat a healthy lunch, hang out with your friends and family, eat dinner, etc, as you know you got a solid, focused eight hours in. Of course, in order for this to work, you must seep early too – around 9 pm.

HACK#2: Keep your morning routine short

If you read my post on morning rituals <<hyperlink>> that you can try, it is important to not spend too much time on your morning routine. If you’re spending 60-90 minutes on completing rituals that aren’t really tailored to you, and you’re just “doing them to do them,”  you’re running out of willpower. Willpower has been scientifically proven  <<hyperlink>> to be like a glass of water, and as soon as you wake up and go through your day, it is emptying slowly, but surely. Keep it as short as possible and only do the few “cornerstone” rituals that you actually need to complete and that you know for a fact actually helps you personally.

HACK#3: Intermittent Fasting or don’t eat a big breakfast

This productivity hack goes very well with HACK #1. I will not go into the whole science of “intermittent fasting,” as I am not at all, qualified, but m best explanation is that eating “three square meals a day” is not natural for a human being, and when you eat a big breakfast, all your body focuses all its resources on your stomach to digest the large concoction you just consumed, therefore all the blood (and energy) rushes to aid the process, which means, less blood in your brain, which makes you feel sleepy. This is the same reason you feel sleepy after a large meal and you sense a nap around the corner.

HACK#4: Paper “To-Do List” (write at the beginning of the day or at night)

In the age of technology, we have been given amazing efficiency tools, but which have inadvertently taken away from effectiveness.When you have a “digital” to-do list, you are in danger of having a to-do list with unlimited bullet points and checkboxes, rendering you, unfocused and ineffective. Using a “to-do list” app or the note app on our phone can create an infinite-sized to-do list where you’re constantly weighing what you have to do next until you finally get down by decision fatigue and pigeonhole yourself into what is the easiest and has the least resistance (which is often the least important).

How do you mitigate this?

Take a normal piece of paper (e.g. letter size 8.5 x 11 in) and fold it three times, and tear/cut them according to those partitions. Take one of those small pieces of paper and write your to-do list on one side of that.

That will force you to clarify and prioritize what is actually important to get done that day, as opposed to having this limitless, growing to-do list that as far you know, will never be completed.

HACK#5: Work in public – Coffee Shop, Co-Working Space

As humans are social creatures, social pressure is often something that is avoided, but it can also be used in our favor.

If you’re a remote entrepreneur and often find yourself working at home, it is sometimes quite often to become distracted. Laying down, exercising, scrolling through Facebook or Instagram, watching YouTube videos are all things that can take away from hours spent touching calling clients, base with your virtual team, or thinking of new marketing strategies.

What you can do is work in public where this is social pressure to minimize or eliminate any chance of these time-wasters.

When you work in a coffee shop or a co-working space and you’re in an environment with other people are working and being productive, you’re more likely to do the same.

How would it feel if everyone around you was taking care of business and getting stuff done while you were slouched in your chair scrolling through Instagram liking cat photos and puppy videos?

You would feel out of place.

*Another thing you can do this to make this more effective is positioning your laptop to where everyone in the coffee shop or co-working space can see what you’re working on, or rather if you’re working on anything at all.

HACK#6: Pomodoro Technique

The Pomodoro is a productivity technique where you use a timer (e.g. a digital watch, an app on your phone, an egg timer, etc.) to break down your working into “sprints” and “rest” periods to stay focused, keep working, and get stuff done.

An example of one cycle would be…

  1. Work for 25 minutes
  2. Rest for 5 minutes
  3. Work for 25 minutes
  4. Rest for 5 minutes
  5. Work for 25 minutes
  6. Rest for 5 minutes
  7. Work for 25 minutes
  8. *Rest for 15 minutes

Most people “claim” to work for eight hours per day, but in reality, they’re maybe getting one hour of actual work per day because they are not being systematic in your approach to working, resting, and staying focused on getting stuff done.

In the case of the Pomodoro Technique, you don’t burn yourself out and keep yourself fresh throughout the day, and eventually, you can call it quits and not feel guilty about not working, as you know that you got a lot done.

Some people use the Pomodoro Technique to beat procrastination and just get over the initial hump of starting work that day, others (like me) use it throughout the day.

The psychological trick is thinking to yourself, “can I sit down and work on (insert undesirable to-do list item) for just 25 minutes?… Of course, I can. It’s only 25 minutes. Then BOOM before you know it, you’re productive.

My favorite phone app for the Pomodoro Technique is called “Tide.” It is my current favorite as it has an “immersion” mode that penalizes you can cancel your Pomodoro Technique if you leave the app for too long and you have to start all over, keeping you on track and away from cat photos on Instagram.

HACK#7: Do your most important/urgent items first


HACK#8: Take breaks – take a nap to relax or take a walk to get your blood moving

Contrary to the usual American “hustle hard” and “no breaks,” this will fatigue you and you will be in danger of burning out.

Olympic athletes are obsessed with working, but they know that rest and recovery is just as important as practice and training.

Use Negative Motivations To Achieve Your Goals

When trying to achieve your goals, don’t just focus on your positive motivations.

Most people will envision the Ferarri, the house in Beverly Hills, etc., but if you know anything about marketing or human psychology, people are more willing to work hard and push themselves to move away from pain even more than they’re willing to move towards pleasure.

Many successful people did not hit their stride until their back was truly against the wall.

Whether they…

Lost their job.

– or –

Had a kid

– or –

Became homeless.

Take Lewis Howes for example. He admits that his number one motivator when he was getting started in business to get off his sister’s couch.

People will go hell or high water to avoid the absolute worse of scenarios, because the truth is, many people’s quota for “comfort” is much lower than a Lamborghini and a jaw-dropping mansion.

Making $70,000 per year, a nice house, and a good car is enough for most people, and that’s perfectly fine.

However, if you claim you want more out of life, you need to find ways to trick your mind into motivating it to work harder, and negative emotions is a great way to do exactly that.

A great way to do this is Tim Ferriss’s “fear-setting” exercise he explains in The 4-Hour Workweek (a MUST-READ for any internet entrepreneur).

It is essentially the opposite of “goal-setting.”

In “fear-setting,” you define your biggest fears of what will happen if you DON’T achieve your goals.

Instead of thinking what will happen if you have a successful business, instead, think to yourself, what will happen if you DON’T have a successful business.

What is the absolute WORST thing that can happen?

NOT living where you’ve always wanted to live.

NOT being surrounded by the kind of people you want to be surrounded with.

NOT progressing and evolving as a person.

NOT eating the kind of food you want to eat.

NOT giving your family (or future family) the life they deserve.

Just like in marketing, you need to take these pains and agitate it.

REALLY take each of these things that you fear the most and agitate it until it becomes extremely uncomfortable until you hit the threshold of taking MASSIVE action.

Also, notice that the motivations above range from “petty” to “important” to “meaningful.”

“Petty” could be “not getting the Lamborghini that you’ve always wanted.:

“Important” could be “not being healthy as a person”

“Meaningful” could be “not being able to take care of your loved ones.”

Where it falls in the “petty to important to meaningful” spectrum, be SHAMELESS about it, and leverage all three to push you to take action go after what you want.

After setting your goals, reverse-engineering how you’re going to achieve them, and envisioning how good your life can be if you achieve them, take the time to think about what would happen if you DIDN’T achieve your goals – if you decided to stay the same.

As an entrepreneur and a practical psychologist, you have the have the ability to “trick” and control your own mind to get yourself to do things you wouldn’t normally be able to do.

If you think about the top-performing athletes, despite them being in the top 0.01% in their sport, their biggest pain and fear is NOT being the best – NOT being #1.

Most people would be satisfied with just being “pretty good” or being “better than most people” – not them. They will push their mind and their body over the normal human limit to see things through.

Pay Whatever It Costs To Be Successful

When it comes to becoming successful and the opportunity to live out your dreams and do whatever you want, don’t be cheap/stingy.

If you want to start a business, and you need to buy a course.

If you want to start a YouTube channel, and need to buy a vlogging camera.

If you want to start a podcast, and you need to buy a microphone.

As an entrepreneur, it’s important to resourceful and leverage what you already have, but if you ABSOLUTELY NEED SOMETHING like a domain, hosting, a how-to book, a virtual assistant, whatever it may be, pay whatever it costs to be successful – financially, time-wise, making sacrifices, whatever.

Of course, make sure your spending isn’t frivolous, you actually do your research, and recommendations from your successful peers and mentors, but don’t skimp on quality and increasing the probability of your success.

It’s good to be resourceful as an entrepreneur and leverage what you already have, but if you don’t buy the things that you need, it will dramatically slow down your progress or worse, keep you from ever achieving the success that you want.

I’ve had many friends come to me, saying they want to start a business and tell me they want to be successful and they’re willing to do whatever it takes and they hint at the fact they want me to advise them on how to do so.

In the moment, they may have a passion and a fire, but these “emotions” fade very easily for wantrepreneur.

If they want me to “advise” them or “mentor them,” that inherently means I need to get what’s in my head, into their head, and make sure they’re moving in the right direction, and the easiest, most cost-efficient way to do that is to give them the same learning resources that I went through, and they will literally get the same things that I was taught.

Or even better, I’ll recommend a book, course, or learning resource that will dramatically CUT the learning curve (literally shaving off dozens or hundreds of hours) of them figuring it out on thier own or consuming a bunch of free content (blog articles, YouTube videos, etc.)

Keeping this in mind, the easiest test to see how “serious” they are, I recommend a book to them.

The next time I see them, whether it be a few days or a few weeks later, I ask the what they thoguht of the book.

“Oh, I haven’t ordered it yet.”

“I don’t have time to read right now.”

“I tried to find it for free online.”

Now, there may be a legitimate reason on why they weren’t able to read a book or listen to the audio vesrion immediately, but more often than not, if htey haven’t read it by then, chances are, that they’ll never read it.

Before, they told me they were willing to do whatever it takes to be successful (a.k.a. pay whatever it costs) yet, when it came time to take their nose to the grindstone, they couldn’t do something as simple as spend $9.91 on a book and get through 200 pages.

Are you kidding me?

If you can’t spend the 6 hours and 31 minutes to get through the book, how on earth are you going to invest the THOUSANDS of hours of trial and error to have a successful business?

Again, if you can’t spend $9.91, spend 6 hours and 31 minutes to get through 200 pages, you are lying to yourself and everyone around you that you are “willing to do whatever it takes” or “pay whatever it costs” to be successful.

You won’t spend spend $9.91, spend 6 hours and 31 minutes to get through 200 pages, to increase the probability of you making millions.

Again, DON’T BE STINGY when it comes to your success.

You don’t want to look back at your life and think, “You know, I should have taken person x’s advice,” I should have read that book,” or I should have bought that course.”

A lot of life comes down to, are you willing to pay what it costs?

Someone recently asked me how I am participating in a full-time, 4-week digital marketing boot camp and running a business at the same time.

The vague, yet accurate answer?


It may sound counter-intuitive, but you can make your life much easier if treat it like a machine. You decide the output, you design it, build it, maintain it, and constantly update it to be more efficient and effective.

Consider the device that you are reading this post on right now. As soon as you hit the “Power” button, the device goes through a checklist of items to turn the screen on and make it functional for you to use. This checklist is followed exactly every single time to ensure that your device performs at the highest level on a consistent basis.

In a recent blog post, I mentioned the benefits of having a set of morning rituals that you can do to put yourself at peak performance every single day. In the post, I also included the “checklist” below so I know exactly what to do and in which order to spare myself the mental exertion, time, and energy.

This is one of the many systems that I have installed in my “life machine” to keep me organized, consistent, and my output “high-quality.”

Business Automation

Now, how does this apply to business?

When you are a freelancer or working alone, it is much more simple (although less easy) to keep track of everything as opposed to running a business. The four main areas for a business machine to function include technical (production), management, marketing, and financials. You quickly realize that all of these areas cannot be maintained and executed on alone and that you need to recruit, delegate, and “clone” yourself so you can focus on higher-level activities (vision, strategy, growth, etc.).

Every freelancer’s favorite song is “No One Can Do It Better Than Me” by [Freelancer’s Name Here].

In school, we are taught to be self-sufficient and do as much as we can by ourselves. In a business, especially if you are trying to grow/scale, this is not a viable option. How do companies like Google and Apple function with tens of thousands of employees? And how does everyone know exactly what to do?

Again — systems.

You build a set of standard operating procedures or a “company manual” that you can hand off to a new employee that they can execute on immediately.

Here is an example “page” out of my company’s manual:

I included the specific video procedure/tutorial below because quite honestly, it’s not even that good. But it still got the job done as I was able to quickly hand it off to a new hire without any hiccup in the business.

In regards to systems, my mentor told me, “It doesn’t have to be pretty, it just has to work.”

And guess what I do with these? I hand it off to someone else and effectively “clone” myself. I can expect that the output will be consistent with my own and can dramatically minimize or completely eliminate any onboard training for new employees. In addition, if anyone forgets what/how to do something, they can just refer to the working procedure and video tutorial without having to clarify with me.

This is how businesses grow and scale quickly. Everything is a template. Everything is a checklist.

It is also important to note that you need to as specific as possible with your working procedures and video tutorials to eliminate any vagueness or gray areas. You should assume the person you are working with is a blank slate with almost no experience. You will most likely hand these resources off to different types of people in the future with varying backgrounds, skill sets, and experience.

The procedures should be so simple to understand that you should be able to bring anyone off the street, hand them the working procedure, and they will know exactly what to do and how to do it.

Upgrade The Machine

It is very important to note that the working procedure is always a work in progress and will never be complete. It can always be tweaked to be improved, more efficient and more effective.


There you have it! These are the core fundamentals of how people run a 4-hour per week “Lifestyle Business” and how to automate your business so you can live the lifestyle that you want. You can now hire someone else to run your team and business for you so you can set your business on autopilot and sip piña coladas and fall asleep on the beaches of Thailand.

Every new year it happens.

People set their New Year’s Resolution.

“This is the year…”

“I change my life.”

“I turn things around.”

“I finally start that new business.”

“I lose weight.”

“I start eating healthy.”

“I improve my social life.”

The only problem with this?

This is a HORRIBLE, VAGUE way to set goals.

People have the same new year’s resolution year after year, never to see it come to fruition.

The problem stems not from the execution, but from the GOAL-SETTING itself.

They’re not doing it properly.

There is an EASY, SIMPLE, step-by-step process to achieve your goals.

It’s called “SMART” goals

You want your goal to be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely.

The easiest way to demonstrate this is the popular “lose-weight” goal.

When you ask someone what their new year’s resolution is, and they say, “I wanna lose weight,” and you can almost guarantee they will look the same position in 365 days.

They need to BREAK IT DOWN and REALLY think about their goal of losing weight.

Let’s use the SMART system to INCREASE the probability of that goal being achieved.


What does “lose weight mean”?

How many pounds EXACTLY?

For example:

“I want to lose 25 pounds this year.”


How can you measure that you are moving towards your goal?

Are you going to the gym 3x per week? 5x per week?

How many calories do you need to consume?

How can you track how many calories do you need to burn?


Is it possible to actually go to the gym 3x per week? Will your schedule allow it?

Can I really go on this specific diet or do I know myself well enough where I need at least one cheat day?


Is losing 25 pounds actually possible this year?

Or is a pie-in-the-sky dream.

One way to decide this is whether people have accomplished this before or not.

Have a lot of people done this before? Have a few? One? None?

In the case of losing 25 pounds, it is very possible


If I want to lose 25 pounds in one year, that means I need to lose around 2 pounds per month, which means I have to lose at least 1 pound per 2 weeks (VERY doable).

After you realize this (especially that last step), you realize this is VERY possible, and that you CAN do this. 25 pounds doesn’t sound like such a daunting number.

After deciding your SMART goal, I 100% recommend SURROUNDING yourself with people who will keep you accountable for achieving your goal. Do EVERYTHING POSSIBLE to practically guarantee your success.

(1) Get a personal trainer.

(2) Sign up for a group class where you will see other people, who will recognize that you are applying yourself and showing up every week.

(3) Spend less time with people who will keep you from your goal (people who eat junk food all the time) –or– if you’re really serious, stop hanging out with them completely.

(I realize this sounds extreme, but if you’re serious, you won’t risk even 1% of you not achieving your goal, if it is in fact, important to you)

(4) Get an accountability partner. Have someone who is pushing themselves to achieve the same goal and schedule a weekly call and/or regular updates on each other’s progress.

Peer-pressure is a GOOD thing if you use it to your advantage. NO MAN is an island, and you will perform better in the company of others.

*Note: However, be sure to not rely on your peers. If your group class got canceled that week, your out-of-shape roommate is teasing you for eating healthy and going to the gym often, or your accountability partner is not as serious as you, this should NOT affect your behavior. You are 100% RESPONSIBLE for your own success and should not / cannot blame your class instructor, roommate, accountability. It’s up to you to make it happen.

Here’s an exercise…

Take the five people that you spend the most time with.

Financially, health-wise, fitness-wise, sense of humor, socially, dating-wise…

Generally speaking, that’s you.

The fascinating thing is that there’s actually a scientific reason behind this.

In the brain, there’s something called “mirror neurons.”

“Mirror neurons are a type of brain cell that respond equally when we perform an action and when we witness someone else perform the same action.”

– American Psychological Association.

It’s very “monkey-see, monkey-do,” literally.

Monkeys in laboratories started to mimic or “mirror” the behaviors they would see scientific researchers would do regularly.

Have you ever had a new friend or roommate and found yourself accidentally using the same words, phrases, or “lingo” they used?

Have you ever found yourself behaving like this?

Have you ever found yourself thinking like them?

The truth is there is a scientific, empirical reason it happens.

Now, most people would look at the “average of the five” concept and start blaming their situation on their environment and the circumstances they were born into or that they were given.

This truly is a “victim” mentality, as you can proactively change your situation and surroundings.

You can actually uproot your homes, change your friends, change your job, change your environment, etc.

You can change your environment if you choose to.

Now, for some people, it could take longer than others.

You have friends that you feel like you can’t abandon…

You’re under a work contract for a few more months.

You have a lease that you’re stuck under…

That is completely fine.

Just accept that you are 100% responsible for putting yourself in that situation because that’s the decision you tried to make, fulfill that obligation, then as fast as possible, MOVE ON.

It is important to keep in mind that you not only the average of the five people you spend the most time with but the influences.

What do you watch on TV?

What kind of music do you listen to?

What kind of magazines are you reading?

On the other hand…

Do you watch any educational content? On what?

Do you listen to educational podcast or audiobooks?

Do you ever read any books? What kind?

I once had a friend who I was discussing this with, and he talked about how noticed listening to the news a lot of his free time made him feel a bit more anxious and tense because as you may know, news stations tend to broadcast a ratio of nine negative news stories to two negatives as the stimulation attracts (and keeps) more viewers.

I asked him why didn’t just stops.

“I can’t, it’s an addiction!”

Understand that despite knowing these logical facts, some people will never change their situation because

  1. They don’t want to
  2. They have no self-discipline

I also remember there was a time when I move in with a new set of roommates.

They really had zero interest in exercising and new roommate, but day in and day out, they would see me leave in my gym clothes and my water bottle, and over time, they would see my progress, they found themselves wanting to go to.

How can you apply this from a practical standpoint?

If you want to become fit and healthy, spend as much time as possible around people who fit and healthy, and over time, after you hear them mentioning they’re going to the gym, see them order healthy food at a restaurant, see how great they look… over time you’ll find that you want the same things and you will naturally start moving towards it.

If you want to improve your business, do your best to hang out with people who are doing well in the same industry. Over time, you’ll find yourself adopting their mindsets, beliefs, philosophies, work ethic, etc. because your “mirror neurons” are picking up on it.

Unless you have a real, moral obligation to your current situation, don’t waste too much time trying to change certain aspects of it. Sometimes you have to be strong and just leave it for a new one.

In order for you to change, your environment has to.

Over the past few years, I've had opportunities to chat with other internet entrepreneurs, which, more often than not, turn into deep, insightful conversations.

When an idea or an epiphany would come up from these talks, I would make a mental note or jot things down in my phone's notes app, yet I knew that a few golden nuggets of wisdom would fall through the cracks. As we all know, human memory’s not perfect.

DotCom Ballers is the opportunity to record these conversations and help educate and shed light on how the best internet entrepreneurs, digital marketers, and online influencers think and behave, understanding how it all led to their success today. It's a series of conversations with some of the most prolific and effective minds that are making waves on the internet today.

Having an online business completely changed my life as it gave me the freedom of time, location, and lifestyle. DotCom Ballers is my way of giving back and sharing the crème de la crème.

In the beginning, podcast episodes, blog posts, book reviews, etc. may be sporadic, but over time, I plan to have a consistent and predictable release schedule – weekly, or even daily.

Over time, the vision and direction of DotCom Ballers will develop and become more clear, but for now, I'm just focused on getting the first episode out!
